man..what a fuss for Prop 8! Is this the same America which shows 'it can reboot' electing a Black man as President!...on the other hand it marginalises a community, who are already psychologically opressed.

Ultimately California restored the 'Traditional' Marriage. On June 17th '08 California Supreme Court leagalised same-sex marriage as everybody under the clause of California constitution has right to marriage! Which is held for homosexual indivudual too. Thus aproximately 1800 same-sex couples got married from June to early November. But some californians pleaded through Proposition 8, to Ban Gay-Lesbian marriage, declaring this legal recognition destroy the foundation of traditional marriage...which is essentially the fruit of blind religious upbringing, personally I find no solid base. The complete unreasonable protest.

It is astonishing, that how a cosmopolitan demography of California could make a prejudised decision & Voted YES on Prop.8. Again, 70% of black community, which itself is regarded till a minority, voting YES - means rastricate another mirority's right! Prop. 8 Campaigners has spent a wide chunk of money to promote it, than the other half protesting against it & supports Gay marriage, lack in strategy due to poor funding! It is heard, that a fake robo-call of Barack Obama, was also a convincing factor for the Black majority to vote for Prop. 8.

From 5th November, day after the general election, most counties like Napa-Sonoma, put same-sex marriages on hold, later on the Attorney General rewrote the 'Constitution to eliminate the right of same-sex couples to marry in California". Now the dillemma is people has given their opinion, it is not going to be changed, then what will happen to those 1800 couples, whom the Supreme court has given legal permission!

One thing is not yet clear to me...How come legalising Gay marriage could hinder the traditional marriage, which certify a social bond within a man & his 'muli-productive' woman! But you know at the end of the day, you come across, there are more nerds on the streets than the homosexuals otherwise I find no conclusion that Prop. 8 actually wins!...again, see the heights of jerk, Same-sex people are not allowed to even foster-care, no matter they have good parenting skill and there are plenty of children in need of personal care & protection!

মার্কিন জনতা আরেকবার ইতিহাস গড়ল কাল রাত্তিরে। রিপাব্লিকানদের শ্বেতদূর্গ ভেঙ্গে ঢুকে পড়ল ৪৭ বছরের কৃষ্ণাঙ্গ তরুন, বারাক ওবামা। ১৯৭৬ সালের পর এই প্রথম এত বিপুল ভোটে জয়ী ডেমোক্রাট্র-রা। এই নির্বাচন-এর এক ঐতিহাসিক তাৎপর্য ছিল দুটো কারনে হিলারি ক্লিন্টন কে হারিয়ে ডেমোক্রাট্র-দের হয়ে প্রতিনিধিত্ব করছিল বারাক ওবামা, আমেরিকার নির্বাচনে তথা আমেরিকার ইতিহাসে এই প্রথম কোনও আফ্রিকান বংশদ্ভুত এদেশের সর্বোচ্চ ক্ষমতায় এল। দ্বিতীয়ত, রিপাব্লিকান প্রার্থী জন ম্যাকেইন, আলাস্কার গভর্নর সারাহ পালিন কে তার রানিং মেইট হিসেবে মনোনীত করেন অর্থাৎ কনজার্ভেটিভ রিপাব্লিকানরা এবারই প্রথম কোনো মহিলা-কে ভাইস প্রেসিডেন্টের মত গুরুত্বপূর্ণ পদের উপযুক্ত ভেবেছিল। দুঃখের বিষয় সেটা আর সম্ভব হল না, (হলে যে কতটা সুফল হত তা নিয়ে দ্বিমত আছে, কারন গত দুমাসে, সারাহ পালিন, যথেষ্ট বোকামোর পরিচয় দিয়ে গেছেন); যাই হোক মার্কিন জনতা তাদের মত জানাল বারাক ওবামা-কে আমেরিকার আগামী প্রেসিডেন্ট মনোনীত করে। এই জয় মার্কিন মাটিতে কালো, লাটিনো আমেরিকান দের এক অন্যতম প্রতিষ্ঠা; এমনো এক সময় ছিল যখন আফ্রিকানদের ভোটাধিকারই ছিলনা, তাদের নাগরিকত্বই অস্বীকার করা হত, আজ একজন অ্যাফ্রো-আমেরিকানকে প্রেসিডেন্ট হিসেবে পেয়ে অনেকেই চোখের জল ধরে রাখতে পারেনি। ছোট-বড় সকল কালো আমেরিকানেরি স্বপ্ন ছিল এই দিনটি যা তারা তাদের জীবনকালে দেখতে পাবেন কখনই আশা করেননি।
আজকের ইউথ আইকন, বারাক ওবামা -ব্যাক্তি হিসেবে ঠান্ডা মাথার, কেতাদুরস্ত, তিক্ষন, রাজনীতিবিদ, কিন্তু অসম্ভব ঘরোয়া। যার আসাধারন নেতৃত্ব শুধু যুবসমাজকেই আন্দোলিত করেনি; মধ্যবিত্ত প্রেক্ষাপটে তার বাস্তবিক সমাধান, মার্কিনী সাদা-আমজনতা নির্দ্বিধায় তার পরিবর্তনের সংজ্ঞায় বিশ্বাস করেছে। এই নির্বাচন শুধু ওবামা-বাইডেন অ্যাডমিনিট্রেশনের জয় নয়, ওবামার পদাতিকবাহিনী তরুণ প্রজন্মের জয়! যুবশক্তি ও ইন্টারনেটের এক অনবদ্য মেলবন্ধনের সাক্ষী হয়ে রইল ২০০৮এর ঐতিহাসিক মার্কিন নির্বাচন।

প্রিয় বন্ধুরা,

সকলের জন্য বিজয়া-র প্রীতি ও শুভেচ্ছা! দেশের থেকে এত দূরে বসে, প্রবাসী পুজোর হুল্লোড়ে দুধের সাধ ঘোলে মেটাচ্ছি। আমি কোনোদিন-ই আস্তিক নই...শারোদৎসব নিয়ে আমার বিশেষ কোনও মাতামাতি-ও কোনোকালে ছিল না। পশ্চিমবঙ্গের কোলিয়ারী অঞ্চলের এক মফস্বল শহরে আমি বড় হয়েছি। বাড়ীর সামনের বড় রাস্তা ধরে এক-কিলোমিটারের মধ্যে তিন-তিনটে বিশাল পুজো হত। ঢাক-বাদ্যি, আলোর রোশনাই, মাইকের চীৎকার শুরু হয়ে যেত ষষ্ঠীর সন্ধ্যে থেকেই। প্রশাসন থেকে পুজোর চারদিন সন্ধ্যেবেলা বড় রাস্তায় যানচলাচল বন্ধ করে দেওয়া হত, দর্শনার্থীদের ঢল নামত তারপর...রাত্তির শেষ হয়ে আসত, মানুষের উদ্যম তখনও শেষ হতনা। আমাদের ছোট শহর আসানসোল এ যে এত মানুষ কোথায় থাকে, থ হয়ে তাই ভেবেছি কত ছোটবেলায়! সারাদিন মাইকের গানের অত্যাচারে অতিষ্ঠ হয়ে যেতাম, সন্ধ্যে থেকে রাস্তায় পা দেওয়ার উপার থাকত না, পাড়ার পুজো বেপাড়ার লোকে কেড়ে নিয়ে যেত, কতবার যে ভেবেছিলাম তখন, অনেক হয়েছে বা-বাহ! পুজোর সময় আর বাড়ীতে থাকা যাবে না!...

আজ বছর চারেক আমি পুজোর সময় বাড়ী যেতে পারিনি, কর্মসংক্রান্ত বিষয়ে জড়িয়ে, আর এবার ত সাত সম্মুদ্দুর পাড়ে ক্যালিফর্নিয়া-য়! যদিও ক্যালিফর্নিয়া-র সুখ্যাতি আছে প্রচুর বাঙ্গালি থাকে বলে আর ৪-৫টা দুর্গাপুজো হয় বলে তবে আমিতো জাত প্রবাসী নই, এখানকার মন্দের ভাল মানসিকতা টা আমি আনতে পারিনি...ডাকের সাজ, সিউলি ফুল, হলদে রোদ, প্যান্ডেলের কারুকার্য আর প্রতিমার শৈল্পিক ভঙ্গি নিয়ে ক্লাবগুলি-র প্রতিযোগিতা (যদিও অনেকে বলেন এগুলো-র ফলে পূজো সাবেকিয়ানা হারাচ্ছে, তবু তাই যেন খুঁজছিলাম আমি ক্যালিফোর্নিয়ায় পুজোয়!)...পাঞ্জাবী আর শাড়ী পরে গাড়ী চড়ে মাইল এর পর মাইল পেড়িয়ে কোনো কলেজ বা কম্যুনিটি হলের মধ্যে ছোট ছাউনিতে সপরিবারে মা-দুর্গাকে দেখেছি নিষ্প্রানভাবে অঞ্জলি নিয়ে যাচ্ছেন! নাস্তিক হয়েও আমার মনে পড়ে গেছে ধুপ ধূনো আর ঢাকের আওয়াজে ভিড় ঠেলে আমিও কতবার গেছি সেই মৃ্ন্ময়ী মূ্র্তির কাছে...কিন্তু সেই আসাধারন মহিষাসুর মর্দিনীকে আমি খুঁজে পেলাম না ক্যালিফর্নিয়ায়...কাশফুল পেলাম, পেঁজা তুলো মেঘ দেখলাম, কিন্তু আমার ছোট্ট শহরের ধুলো-ধোঁয়ায় ভরা পুজো দেখা হলনা! আক্ষেপ আছে একটু, পুজোর সময়ের মানুষের সেই যে অনাবিল আনন্দ, বাচ্চাদের সেই মাতামাতি আমি মিস করলাম! আর হ্যাঁ এবার পুজোয় আমার একটাও নতুন জামা হয়নি!

ওহ! ভাল খবরটা তো দিলাম-ই না টীগ এর নিউজলেটার বেরোচ্ছে , এ মাসের শেষে!

অন্যান্য ভাষায় টিগ এর আনুষ্ঠানিক প্রারম্ভের সময়সীমা নির্ধারিত হয়েছে ২০০৯ এর মার্চ। আজ Chiara-র, আমাদের বহুভাষিক দলের ম্যানেজার, সাথে কথা বলে, সেরকমই জানতে পারলাম। বাংলা সাইটের প্রকাশও সেই একই সঙ্গে হওয়ার কথা। এখনো অনেক অনেক কাজ বাকি। আমরা প্রায় দুহাজার এর মত ফ্রেজ অনুবাদ করে ফেলেছি, কিন্তু আরো হাজার হাজার ফ্রেজ আনুবাদ এর আপেক্ষায়!
আপনাদের সাহায্য একান্ত কাম্য! টিগ বাংলা-কে আন্তর্জাতিক স্তর-এ পৌঁছে দিতে আমাদের সাহায্য করুন!

বন্ধুরা,
গত কয়েক সপ্তাহ কিছু এলোমেলো কাজে জড়িয়ে পড়েছিলাম। অনুবাদ ছাড়া টীগ এর আর কোনও আঙ্গিকে চোখ ই যায়নি। ইতিমধ্যে আমার সহকর্মী ল্যাপটপ-টি কিছুদিন আগে বিচ্ছিরি ভাবে বিগড়ে বসেছে, অপেক্ষায় আছি কবে সে হাসপাতাল থেকে বাড়ী ফেরে, আর আবার আমি স্ব-মহিমায় অনুবাদ শুরু করতে পারি। তবে আমাদের ভলেন্টিয়ার দের আমার আন্তরিক অভিবাদন, তাদের সক্রিয়তার জন্য। দলের তরুনতম সদস্য, শব্বির (জানিনা নামের বানান ভুল হল কিনা, আমি দুঃখিত!) তার পরীক্ষার সময়েও আনুবাদের কাজ চালিয়ে গেছেন! যদিও যেসব সদস্য তাদের পেশাগত কারনে প্রযেক্ট-এর জন্য নির্ধারিত সময় দিতে পারছেন না, কিন্তু project promotional activity-র সাথে যুক্ত থাকার অনুরোধ জানিয়েছেন, তাদেরকেও আমি আন্তরিক ধন্যবাদ জানাচ্ছি। যদিও নতুন ভলেন্টিয়ারদের জায়গা করে দেওয়ার জন্য তাদের গ্রুপ সদস্যপদ খারিজ হয়ে যাবে কিন্তু তারা মূল অনুবাদ প্রকল্প বা ট্রান্সলেশান প্রযেক্ট-এর সাথে যুক্ত থাকবেন!
ইতিমধ্যে টীগ-এর স্পটলাইট-এ বেশ কিছু নতুন প্রকল্প ঢুকে পড়েছে যেমন ব্লগ অ্যাকশান ডে, টীগ ভিডিও আপডেট এবং সর্বোপরি টীগ এর পাইলট ই-কোর্স...এই তিনটি প্রকল্প-র মাধ্যমে টীগ ম্যানেজমেন্ট ও সদস্য দের মধ্যে আদানপ্রদানের সেতুটি আরও দৃঢ় হতে চলেছে!
মনে হচ্ছে খুব শিগগীর আরো কিছু ভাল খবর শোনাতে পারব!

hey...after months, it's yesterday I's able to have a look of the growing site - TIG in Bengali. Thanks, Mike!!...for making it tangible even at this initial stage.
Currently, it's available only to the Translating Team; but we can soon make it public. Thus, count it down all Bengali speaking TIG members!...oops, not within 3 months huh, it's a mammoth task, after all :(
I still recall, the days when it all started. I's in Brazil, this year & it's 21st Feb. International Mother Language Day!...I's missing my words, written in my tongue...In fact that forced me to approach TIG for launching the site in Bengali.
Then after struggles of a couple of months...we are here, the site renewing itself with a familiar look.
We are a team now with seven sincere volunteers...

This Blog was supposed to be an Advocacy initiative for Earth Charter International...but a while after I found myself surfing for Iz. The Hawaiian musician , Israel Kamakawiwo'ole,'was known for promoting Hawaiian rights and Hawaiian independence, both through his music & through his life'. Iz as a Cult, remained even after 10 years of his premature death in '97 at the age of 38, due to respiratory disorder, caused by his Obesity.

Facing Future - released in '93, considered as the best of his albums, incorporates the featured song, Somewhere Over the Rainbow-What a Wonderful world!

On July 21, 2006 BBC Radio 1 announced that "Somewhere Over the Rainbow/What a Wonderful World" would be released as a single. On July 4, 2007, Israel Kamakawiwoʻole debuted at No. 44 on the Billboard Top 200 Album Chart with "Wonderful World," selling 17,000 units. It was his biggest sales week ever, helping him garner his second No. 1 on Billboard's Top World Music chart. As of October of 2007, the album has sold 75,000 copies.

The song continues to be a low-charting but a best seller, passing 1,040,092 downloads sold as of the survey week ending 3/9/08, according to Nielsen Soundscan.

Israel Kamakawiwo'ole's version of "Over the Rainbow" was played at the conclusion of NBC's political analyst Tim Russert's memorial service in Washington D.C. on June 18, 2008. A strong lyrical effect, use of typical instruments like Ukukele, his soft soothing voice & Iz's innate pronunciation make me spellbound for the first time I listened to it.

I need not, emphasize Earth Charter's mission here, as you would easily come to know about it, by watching the video...but I'm supposed to thank Earth Charter for introducing an Indian with Iz & Hawaiian music as well.
